At E-MAX, we see sustainability as the driving force behind progress. Since 1996, we’ve been committed to delivering innovative, high-quality, and environmentally friendly aluminium solutions. With our circular X-ECO alloy, renewable energy sources, and more efficient production techniques, we’re making great strides toward climate neutrality. In line with the European Green Deal, we aim to be fully CO₂-neutral by 2050. Our reduction plan – part of the Fit for 55% programme – aims to achieve a CO₂ reduction of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 2019.

1996 Start of E-MAX

Three entrepreneurs make their dream come true. They start their own company, specialized in aluminium extrusion: E-MAX Sustainable Aluminium.

2007 – present

Sustainability and CO₂ reduction become key priorities for E-MAX

2007

E-MAX acquires the ALCOA foundry in Kerkrade to produce its own billets from recycled scrap.

2010

After three years of internal research, E-MAX develops its own X-ECO alloy.

2014 – present Next steps

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) researches the effects of recycling on billet performance. The result: properties are equivalent to those of primary aluminium.

2010 – 2019

E-MAX performs internal calculations to determine its carbon footprint.

2019

The first measurement, conducted under supervision of DNV according to ISO14064, shows a carbon footprint of 3.90 tons of CO₂ per ton of aluminium billet.

 

2019 – 2023

E-MAX implements further optimisations to improve its processes.

2021 – 2022

E-MAX installs new furnaces in Kerkrade, leading to reduced gas consumption. Improved mixing of scrap and primary material increases the recycling rate.

2023 New measurement according to EPD VERIFICATION

At the E-MAX foundry, CO₂ emissions of 2.03 tons per ton of aluminium (billet) are now achievable.

2024 EPD Verification

EPD verification has been carried out for four different alloys: Class 6060, X-ECO 6060Q, X-ECO 6060, and X-ECO 6063.

Future

2025 – 2032 E-MAX CO₂ Reduction Plan – FIT for 55%

E-MAX is committed to reducing its CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 2019, aiming for 1.43 tons of CO₂ per ton of aluminium – a reduction of 63%.
E-MAX will achieve this by:

  • Further optimizing gas consumption and the material mix in the foundry
  • Increasing the recycling rate without compromising billet performance
  • Reducing gas usage through process improvements for more efficient output
2050 European Green Deal

E-MAX aims to be climate neutral by 2050, meaning it will offset as much CO₂ as it emits. This includes:
Research into hydrogen
Research into electrification based on green energy

Renewable energy

E-MAX uses renewable energy sources, including a wind turbine since 2017 and solar panels on the maximum available roof surface at all locations. For example, E-MAX Dilsen currently covers 53% of its own electricity needs. In Kerkrade, E-MAX has begun installing solar panels, while the new furnaces installed in 2022 contribute to further gas reduction and are already prepared for future hydrogen use.
